Like BDSM, Marmite, and most cases of syphilis the origin of the sport of squash can be traced back to the British aristocracy. Essentially a sport revolving around pounding tiny balls with a racquet, squash was a natural evolution of other aristocratic past times, and quickly developed a dedicated following.
In the last 20 years, squash has become widely popularized and is no longer the exclusive domain of the elite and moneyed. No where is this more evident than in the Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions, and its associated amateur event the All Ivy Classic Juniors. Years ago an event of this caliber would only have been hosted by an old money institution such as Barclays Capital or Lloyds of London, but today popular fads like egalitarianism and social justice have led to such a significant erosion of class boundaries that even Bear Stearns can sponsor a world class class squash event. What's next the Deutsche Bank Squash Open??!
