Every year at 9pm on July 4th the air above the East River is bombarded with over 20,000 ariel shells. The results are nothing short of breath taking, provided of course that you can find a place to actually see it. If you try to watch it from the FDR, expect to be part of an Orwellian crowd control nightmare which dwarfs even the Time's Square New Year's celebrations in agoraphobic proportion. Don't bother. If you don't have a friend with an East River view or a boat then head out to Williamsburg (1st stop on the L train) before 8pm and walk west to the water. There are viewing points up and down Kent Avenue (5th street is a good one) and farther south on river street (10 minute walk from the subway). Or, alternatively head to Roosevelt Island where $18 can get you access to the best seats in the city, in a very civilized kid friendly atmosphere.

If you register and invite friends you can share your favorite events with your friends.
