4. Best tech pitch
Gnu Altered Genetics
In 1984 Mike Olson and his buddy Pete Saari dropped out of college to begin building snowboards full time. The company they founded, Mervin Manufacturing is the maker of both Gnu and Lib Tech snowboards, and is one of the few snowboarding companies that still manufactures all their boards in the United States.
The Mervin factories are staffed by snowboarding fanatics (a free season pass is perk of the job) and it shows. There's a unique craftsmanship and creative ethos evident in all Mervin's boards.
The Gnu Altered Genetics is a beautifully manufactured board with a really great tag line. It goes like this: Gnu has used a secretly developed a genetically modified wood (Specimen 273677) to fashion a core which fuses the best qualities of balsa, bamboo, and aspen. The result is a board with the same torsional qualities as a normal woodcore board, but 30% lighter.
The pitch is great one and we would love to believe it, but have heard rumors that in reality the wood's Royal Paulownia, an extremely fast growing Chinese native. However, while it's fun to tell your friends that you're riding a Franken-board, what really matters is how the board rides. And this board is a blast to ride. It's light, it's responsive and like all Mervin boards it's fun.
