A nice, inoffensive and surprisingly neighborhoody spot to go to dodge the Greenwich Village crush. Sure the décor seen better days, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Although anyone who's lived in Williamsburg more than a year will claim the scene is far past its sell by date, Union Pool remains an attractive and popular space. On a weeknight in the fall a spot by the firepit in the back garden is nothing short of a treasure.

In the ongoing culture wars of the East Village bar scene, Royale is a huge strike for UESification. Between the plasma TVs, baseball caps, rounds of shots and the girls whose most comfortable mode of communication is via a series of high pitched squeels you can easily forget that not too long ago this used to be one of the best Jazz bars in New York.
