Monkeyheaven says: The body makes a great canvas-- but what lengths will we go to be different? It's getting tough to stand out when even the old ladies at the Bingo Palace are sporting unicorn tatoos and tongue studs-- wake me up when the madness is over.

Monkeyheaven says: Whether we feel attractive to others is much more influenced by self-esteem than by actual physical attractiveness as judged by others. It is not inborn, but learned. This learning occurs in the family and among peers, but these only reinforce what is learned and expected culturally. It is not really true that beauty is in the "eye" of the beholder, but this statement iterates what many women have learned-- that their beauty is a reflection of male desires. So cultural standards for what makes a woman beautiful as evidenced in the popular media have become highly sexualized. In this culture, cosmetic surgery is the fastest growing 'medical' specialty. The work of feminist theorists have demonstrated a relationship between the development of personal boundaries and body image. Personal boundaries are the physical and emotional borders around us. A concrete example of a physical boundary is our skin. Why do women in 2004 have such weak boundaries?

Carrie says: Just a point: I'm the fourth example in the tattoo listing, and if you look at the next entry, you'll see that it was just an April Fool's joke. ;-)
