The great stork derby

Although snopes.com is dedicated to debunking urban legends the most interesting articles on the site are the certainly the legends which have turned out to be true. This one about a man who left shares in liquor compainies to ministers, a house in Jamiaca to 3 lawyers who despised each other, and the rest of his assets to the woman to have the most babies in a ten year period. Also to be found at www.snopes.com is this tidbit about how Jack Nicholson thought his mother was his sister until her death.

Confluence
The idea is simple. The world is criss crossed with theoretical lines of latitude and longitude.  These lines are just an abstract with no real meaning unless you live in Greenwich, England, but their points of confluence (where lines of latitude and longitude intersect) have been chosen by the creator of www.confluence.org as points which can be claimed by anyone who can get to the spot and take a picture. Sounds lame right? Well the key here is getting to the spots. They can be in the middle of the desert, a rainforest or even the south pole. Who knows maybe there's one in your back yard - well, if you live in Cambodia where there's quite a few that have yet to be claimed.Go to the site

New uses for google

Did you know you can use Google for reverse telephone number lookup? This often works even for unlisted numbers, and it returns a handy map of the address where the phone number is registered. We're not sure of what the privacy implications are, but as this search indicates, pretty much everyone's phone number and address is listed it just might not be completely up to date.

1 million dollar DARPA road race!
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) is sponsoring an off road race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with a $1 million dollar cash prize to the winner. Any and all entries are welcome and with a winner take all prize that large it sounds like it just might turn into Cannonball Run III. The catch is that none of the vehicles participating in the race can actually have anyone driving them. They have to be completely autonomous with no link to the outside world, and the race course will be announced only hours before the race begins. So maybe it'll be more like Herbie the Love Bug, only it's sponsored by DARPA so we guess it will be more like Herbie the Bringer of Death and Destruction.Go to the site

Seinfeld script search engine

A new search engine is out and it looks like its going to be stiff competion for Google. Powered by the SSSE (Seinfeld Script Search Engine) even the most obscure Seinfeld references can be identified in seconds. Which episode featured Courteney Cox? Which episode ended with George in a real life game of Frogger? What happened when George, Jerry, and Elaine went to India?
