Love it for the talent and the name..

You wouldn't walk in this place knowing that beneath the relaxed wine bar, there's a small lounge where artists spin their music or freestyle their way into the night.. and if you get there early enough, you should chat with Daniella, the co-owner who named the place after her dogs (those sexy bitches!) A minor note, however, the crowd downstairs is an eclectic bunch - far from what you'd expect on this strip of Avenue B...

homey - in a texas chainsaw sort of way

An appropriate name, given the contradictory symbol of the rabbit; the Spartan approach of coarsely fitting the bar w/ exposed light bulbs, beer bottle-encased votives, and threadbare walls tactfully contrasts w/ the carefully bedecked restroom at the back. And you should make friends w/ the bartender (Sean) and the owner (Drew) both of whom offer quite a character of their own w/ their curious takes on bar-hopping, audiophilism, and the darkly entertaining nature of MacDougal's nocturnal patrons

Maybe there's another 40C?

Everyone wants to visit the up-and-coming hip venues, especially the "happening" spots so I went to this supposedly "cool new bar%u201D. And I found that the only thing worse than Pop music on the turntable and too much ambient lighting is a sparsely populated room where the only willing dancers are the ones who probably shouldn't be on the dance floor. Although, with the right crowd to start the place up (and new suggestions for the DJ)... I GUESS I could see the potential.

It's rape in the form of a service charge

I'm a big fan of lounging by an open window, taking the first few puffs from the hookah, and sampling South American and Greek beers... hell, I'm even a fan of destroying the classic martini by adding a touch (or more) of mango juice, but every time I'm there, I can't shake the feeling that there's something sketchy about it's owner (and my check).

where funk gets a new rep...

I LOVE this place. It's the only tiny venue I've gone where 70's American Funk meets Acid Jazz in the same set practically every night, and the sound's incredible. The highest cover is $10 (usually Saturdays), I've gotten in free before, but other nights ask for $5. The garden at the back is supposedly kick-ass when it's open; the room in btw the garden and the lounge area is pretty chill too. Grab yourself a de konick, get close to the band, and experience an entirely different kind of high...

metaphorically, it's like sex on speed..

My first concert venue in Manhattan.. an unusually "spacious" spot that has three levels: a main bar w/ a dance floor, one flight up shows the stage, and then there's a small-scale balcony area; the alcohol-on-every-floor option is very conducive to a head-banging, oft-animated crowd. And with acoustics as good as this... the only thing better is the literal counterpart of my title for this review.

maybe she had a bad night... or not...

A decent afterthought on a late Tuesday evening when your sobriety's teetering between a really good buzz and being moderately tanked. And if you can amuse yourself with one (particular) inattentive, partly-incapable bartender and a smelly urinal... then you just might find it "average" by NYC standards. After all, my Kronenberg was cold, the DJ was nice (he told me where the bathroom was), and the crowd seemed friendly... REALLY friendly.

go ahead... be one of the cool kids

There are few better places to parade jazz music’s notoriety than near the heart of NY’s Times Square. Flash your ID then head down the narrow staircase into a dimly lit room where you’ll find a crowd that exudes a hint of class and sophistication, but far from being pretentious. College students sit alongside yuppies and visiting couples in a small room where head-bopping, foot tapping, and a little too much snapping is the norm. The food and drinks can get pricey, so budget accordingly.

so good, it's intellectually liberating

A jazz lounge where music is an indelible experience; one that we might think of as emotional and intellectual aesthetic gluttony. With a stage honored by the likes of Coltrane and Davis, there’s no better place to get lost in jazz appreciation. The scene is chill, the singers are soulful, and the interior is so old school that you can’t help but feel like you’ve been transposed to a different time and place. And for a mere $20 to get in on a busy night, I’d shell out the cash in a heartbeat.
